Install or Patch
Please follow these instructions carefully. Take the time to read them completely through first. There are notes throughout that might apply to you. We have tried to cover every possible option, but understand that many different possible directions can be taken when installing World of Warcraft, and patching up to the needed version can be slow and time consuming. Take heart and persevere, as this process is nothing next to the courage you will need to survive World of Warcraft.

Please first determine your starting medium. Options include demo download, retail download, demo dvd, retail dvd. Each of these also has a different starting version based on how old it is. Options for any include pre 1.0, pre 2.0, 2.0 and up. We will try to make this as painless as possible, but understand that World of Warcraft is a Huge game as far as PC games go, and so takes a very long time to install. Any mistakes or wrong turns might turn out badly, needing you to start some of the process over. But again, be determined, and you'll get through it fine.
If you downloaded the 10 day trial from Blizzard, please be warned that it does not work with Saurfang. The Trial seems to download content live, rather than install it all first. Saurfang does not have the ability to do the server half of this sharing. You must install from a retail download, or retail disc to continue on.
If you have previously purchased a retail disc (cd's or a dvd), we will go over your steps now. For downloaded retail, your instructions are further down.
- Install the game normally from your discs. The version you end up on will determine your next course of action. But regardless of the version, you likely have some downloading to do.
- If you end up on 1.1.2, or something in the 1.x range, you will need this. (680MB).
- If you end up somewhere in 2.x, you can use the already installed Blizzard updater to take you further up.
- IF you want The Burning Crusades... Install it BEFORE you continue patching beyond 2.x. You can get it here. (2.3GB). If you went ahead and patched on up to 2.4.3, you won't have to download the patches again, you will just have to wait for them to be applied again.
- IF Blizzard happens to update beyond 2.4.3 before Wrath of the Lich King comes out, and you see it downloading a version greater than 2.4.3, stop the download, and do NOT let it patch the game. You can change your wtf file to stop the automatic patches as documented here.
- Finish your instructions as documented on the connection page.
If you do not have retail discs (most of you won't, dont worry), you can actually download the entire game legally, direct from Blizzard themselves. You can get the full client here. (3.9GB). Once installed, simply continue on with the instructions as above. Client version for the download is 2.3.0.
To know which version of WoW you are running, simply run it and check in the bottom left corner at the login screen.
To start the automatic patching once you are either at 2.x, or have installed TBC and are at 2.x, simply run the WoW launcher. Once patched, please do NOT run the Launcher, as some have reported that it resets the wtf. As I have not seen this behavior, I can not say it will, only that it might. Final patches beyond 2.x are in the realm of 1.2GB for 2.0.0, and roughly 200MB for 2.3.0.
Good luck.
